A few different contractors have approached me over the past year regarding the cost of website hosting for their business website.  I have heard it a few times now from our contractors and they ask, "why is your website hosting price different then my other host or others I have seen on the Internet?"  I thought I would give you the facts about what is included in website hosting.

What is Organic Search and how does this apply to my landing pages?

Imagine my disappointment when I learned organic search was simply the next new buzzword for the concept of pure, or crawler-based search. As some of our readers may find it challenging to keep up with all of the latest lingo, I thought I'd take a moment to at least explain the concept of organic search.
Organic describes a search that returns results by indexing pages based on content and keyword relevancy. This is in contrast to listings ranked based on who paid the most money to appear at the top such as those on Overture.com. Sometimes this is called "pure" or "natural search" as it is supposed to be "untainted" by commercial payments or bids.
Historically, Google has led the way in championing the virtues of natural or organic search. Its primary focus has always been to return fast, highly relevant results based on the content of the page, the relevancy of links pointing to that page, and other "objective" criteria. Sponsored listings have always been clearly separated from the organic search results on Google. However, many other engines have experimented with mixing the two types of search without clearly labeling which is which. This has been followed by public outcries, and at least one cautionary set of statements issued by the FTC in 2002.

Pros and Cons of Organic Search vs Paid Search

Unlike organic foods at your local grocery store, you aren't required to pay extra to reap the healthy benefits of "organic" search. So what are the benefits of organic over paid search?

Organic Search Pros:

  1. Greater Click-throughs: People trust "organically grown" search results more than they do sponsored results. While the engines business is supported by paid ads, many consumers prefer the organic search results. Due to the contextual nature of organic search, the listings can be more relevant and offer a greater depth of choices. Therefore, while paid ads can play an important part in your marketing strategy, ultimately it is the organic search results that will more likely yield the greater click-through rates when all other things are equal. Therefore, it's this type of listing that will maximize the traffic to your site whenever you climb to the top.
  2. Power of Branding: More and more large corporations are investing resources into organic search to gain the marketing benefits of promoting their brand. For example, most consumers would expect to find Dell.com in a search for computers. If your company does not show up for the keyword results in which you'd expect to appear it can be embarrassing. Consumers may wonder if Company X is as important as they once were if they don't even show up in MSN, Yahoo or Google. Conversely, inserting your brand in the top search results can give the impression that your company is important. Therefore, smaller companies can give the impression of big business importance by securing aa better position in organic search than their larger rivals.
  3. Greater Trust Equals Greater Conversions: Most adults learn to apply a healthy dose of skepticism when they see a commercial on TV, a banner ad on the Web, or a sponsored ad on a search engine. After all, we know those ads are commercially motivated and may not always be the most relevant product or solution for our needs. It may simply represent the company that was able to spend the most money to get their message in front of me. Sometimes bigger companies do offer the best products, but there's no guarantee. There's certainly not the same level of trust that we see from visitors arriving from organic search. Organic search can, of course, be commercially influenced. However, a recent survey shows that people tend to trust organic results compared to sponsored listings. On the whole, you should see more visitors from organic search converting to sales, assuming your rankings were for targeted, relevant keywords. In the business world, ROI, or Return On Investment, is king. Fortunately, organic search can give you the high ROI you're looking for or your boss is demanding.
  4. Organic is Free: After all these years, it's still free to submit to Google, arguably the most popular of the organic search engines right now. Google has always been adamant about not charging for inclusion in its index of 4.2 billion pages. Most other organic engines will also index you for free, although some like Yahoo do have paid inclusion options. Paid inclusion simply guarantees your page will get indexed quickly and stay indexed for as long as you maintain your subscription, but does not promise a particular ranking. However, if you have a Web site with good quality content and links from third party sites, paid inclusion is "nice-to-have". It can be very useful in getting pages indexed or re-indexed quickly. This allows you to quickly test various page designs and to feed news and other time-sensitive content to the search engine as quickly as possible.

Organic Search Cons:

  1. Organic Rankings are Not Automatic: With organic listings, you cannot simply hand over a certain amount of money and be guaranteed to quickly and automatically achieve any ranking you desire. Instead, achieving positions in organic search requires the proper technology, skill, and know-how. There has always been a cloud of mystery around the process of achieving top rankings. How's it done? Where do I start? That's why resources like this newsletter and products like WebPosition Gold are essential to a business's success in search engine marketing.
  2. Organic Rankings Require an Investment in Time: The age-old adage of "nothing worthwhile in life ever comes easy" rings true with organic rankings. While they are monetarily free, simply submitting your pages to the search engines is not enough to bring in a flood of new visitors to your Web site. Far too many businesses have been fooled into spending $49 or $99 to submit their site to "thousands" of sites, 99% of which are obscure names you've probably never heard of. The key is that someone doing a search on a major search engine must be able to easily find your Web site.
If your site is buried at the bottom of the list, or simply fails to appear in the first few pages of search results, you can kiss your chances of being found good-bye. The key is to use responsible best practices to create pages that are highly relevant to the keywords that apply to your Web site and the products or solutions you have to offer. . In other words, optimize your pages for search engine visibility and see how fast your position improves. To do this, you simply need to know what each search engine needs for maximum visibility. Then tweak your Web page's content while paying attention to off-page factors like the number and type of links coming to your page. Tune the pages of your site to the preferences of the major search engines and then watch your rankings and traffic climb.
While optimizing your Web site to rank well for organic searches takes more effort than simply buying an ad, it can provide your business with one of the highest ROI results that you're likely to find. Numerous studies have placed search engine optimization at the top of the list of the most effective forms of online marketing. Its low cost, high relevancy, and high conversion rates make it an ideal marketing vehicle for almost any business.
The catch? As with any area of marketing, SEO is a competitive field. Arming yourself with the best technology and knowledge is key to gaining a competitive advantage. Long-time readers of MarketPosition know that WebPosition was the first product on the market to track a Web site's rankings on the search engines and to help improve those rankings. That early lead has given WebPosition more time for its technology to grow and mature than any of its competition. WebPosition's Page Critic module contains a wealth of advice and statistics designed to move your site to the top of the organic search results. Not only that, it also tracks your rankings and gives you advice on how to achieve the best results in both organic and pay-per-click search engines as well. Therefore, you can capitalize on the best of both worlds.

Google announced last week that it made its major change to its rules that determine who shows up in their search engine. As you may know ranking at the top of Google's search engines can be equivalent to tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars to one's business. With google providing customers to one's business, people fight, claw, cheat and do whatever it takes to put their business on the top of these search engines. With this in mind Google has been dealing with complaints that there web pages are not relevant...so what does Google do?

Shake up their rules so the system will not be as abused..

Google Drops Company for Trying to Cheat

The way that major websites like Overstock have programmed their websites have not only been questioned, but Google has outright penalized this company for not following protocol. How do I show up in Adwords?

Many people ask me everyday how do I get to the top of Google with Pay Per Click (PPC)?  If I bid the most amount of money for the placement of my ad won't I show up first on Google?

Here is the formula that Google uses:

Page Position on Google = maximum bid  x quality score

So what does this mean?

Your position on Google's AdWords system is determined by how much you are willing to pay each time someone clicks on your ad at Google multiplied by your quality score.

So what is a quality score?

This is determined by your click rate % ( I know all of this sounds foreign to you), but in a nutshell here is how a quality score works.  When your ad is displayed a customer has a chance to click on your ad.  If they click on that ad then your ad is something that was interesting to them and matched what they searched for.  If that ad was not interesting, then they ignore it.  The higher the percentage of time they click on your ad to get your website or landing page, the better your click rate % will be, which means the better your quality score will be.

So, here is the summary.  If your quality score is high because you have a better ad to get the customer to click on then you may not have to spend as much money to buy a click as the next guy...

Google Fact.....Location facts

Per Google...1 out of every 5 searches done on Google are related to a "location."

Google Local Fact...

Fact:

As of January 2011 approximately 1 million hours are spent every day browsing the maps section on Google.  Maybe you should consider placing your company within the maps section of Google...

How to Show up on Page 1 of Google and the Other Search Engines.

The Highest Ranking Pages on the Internet are the most relevant to what is being searched by the user.

With this thought in mind, it is important to make sure that all of your pages on the Internet are written and programmed so they relate to exactly what is being searched for.  If you are a contractor that finishes basements it is important to make sure that your web page talks about "basement finishing" and does not confuse the Internet by talking about "kitchen remodeling."  We see many contractors that handle all types of work, but it is IMPORTANT to understand that your website cannot talk about these 2 different subjects if you want to effectively rank for one key term or the other.  We cannot have the best of both worlds on one page.  You must split this up and build the appropriate content for both of those search terms.

Your rank is determined by its match to the keyword that is selected.

Company Photos match to Billions of Keyword Searches

Every day millions of searches are done on the Internet with people typing in trillions of different keywords and phrases and finding different results based upon all these different searches. Imagine finding your company photo of your project on a specific webpage that is on your website that relates exactly to that search only.

Well we have been hard at work updating the localized landing page software that creates webpages for our selected customers. Today the technology team announced that after alot of upgrade and hard work that each keyword specific landing page now has the ability to display a complete unique photo for each word generated.

So in summary this is how if works: if we build 1000 pages related to the specific term "stamped concrete," there are thousands of words that relate to stamped concrete that are being searched on the Internet daily like,

"stamped concrete cost"
"stamped concrete patterns"
"stamped concrete patio"
and etc. etc.

With this in mind each page you create must have the proper content and photographs related to the specific search. So in this case we now can attach the proper photos on a mass scale to the proper search terms. This will truly optimize your pages and bring you specific customers based upon what they searched.

More leads...

Congratulations Prestigefence.com - 4 more leads this week from your landing pages.

The Importance of Keywords - MUST READ

Whenever a contractor wants to build a new website or add content to an existing one it is so important to begin with keyword research. Too many people these days build a beautiful website and think they are on their way. If you build a website without the marketing strategy in places it will act like a turd on a log, IT WILL DO NOTHING. I will spell out why keywords are so important.

Whenever a contractor wants to build a new website or update content to an existing one, I would suggest to always start with research keyword .

Why should we do this? There are four main reasons:

  • Researching keyword will tell you exactly what people are looking for. What that means is you don’t have to wonder or guess, or waste your time putting together content that users aren’t looking for.
  • If you use the keywords users are looking for in their search then you take full advantage of the opportunity of getting the right type of traffic from the search engines.
  • Researching keywords will advise you which categories you should create on your website and "how important they are relative to each other."
  • If you don’t research your keywords, your going to miss out on tons of business that could have been yours.

Submitting Your Listing Can Save You Thousands of Dollars.

If a local business submits a properly optimized Local Business Listing to the right local directories on the Internet their business can generate up to 2,000 unique and local visitors per month. By attracting 24,000 unique visitors a year a business can save about $24,000 in PPC (Pay Per Click Costs) a year. (On a side note - Pay Per Click Costs are what you pay to a company like Google to get phone calls or leads for your business.) These benefits sure do justify either the effort put in to do this work or paying a company a minimal amount to do the work for you.

Here are some numbers:
1. There are about 3,000,000 businesses that are related to the building and construction industry.
2. 50% of the industry DOES NOT have a website.
3. Thousands of new businesses are created monthly.

And less than 25% of these companies take advantage of the amount of business that exists on the Internet. Take advantage of the opportunities that the Internet provides. You will be surprised to find out how easy it is to benefit from the Internet.

The Importance of PAGE 1 results....

There is a great study regarding the importance of your business listed on Page 1 of the search engines and is a must read.  Read this study and get a better understanding why Page 1 Results are important.

Do not let your money slip away

"As some may have experienced and my self now for the first time, keeping a steady hand on google placement is an ongoing project. Don't let it slip away, if you do, you let money slip away with it. If there is no other better time, it's now, winter is shortly upon us and that is when work slows down and when we need to be at our highest visibility."

Google Local Now Accepts User Photos

Google has just announced that users of the popular search engine can now upload photos that relate to a business located on Google.  Up until recently only the business owner could upload and attach photos to their Google Local section.  This move shows Google is putting their foot forward in the "Social Network" space.  This follows in the footsteps of other local types sites that are popular within the social circles.

This also demonstrates that a business listing will continue to grow over a period of time as the "social network" participates and adds information to the listing that they feel is relevant.  The importance of growing and stabilizing your local listing on Google is becoming more and more important every day as businesses are starting to understand that you cannot inconsistently put information about your business on the World Wide Web and expect results!

Why Google?

The biggest question I hear from contractors has to do with Google and their local listing section and how this relates to the rest of Google.  The question is whether this section is worth paying someone every month to manage their listing.  The other general thought process is whether or not you should keep paying for this every month when last month I did not notice any results.  It is important to understand what results you are looking for from your listing.  We all obviously want more leads and phone calls, but be cautious and patient because YOU MUST STABILIZE YOUR BUSINESS!

Fencing leads continue to come in for Florida fence contractor.

A couple days ago another fencing lead had been generated for one of our fence contractor customers located in Florida. The landing pages seem to be working well for them as the leads continue to come in from their landing pages that had been added to their current website.

New Bellflower, CA Website Published.

Thank you to the web team for the publish of the new website http://www.homecraftmasters.com/ this morning.  Home Craft Masters is a good looking remodeling company in Bellflower, CA.  They are very precise in their kitchen remodeling craft and I have to say BJ knows his renovation work.

Who is Google and what is this Local Places Product?

You see the Internet is made up many search engines that go out and find information for you to view.  Google is one of those search engines and they do a good job locating information billions of times each day for people like you and I.  And when this information is found it is generally displayed to us like a grocery store displays products on their shelves.  Let's for one second imagine we are shopping for our 4th of July picnic.  We head to the aisle where the ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise are located.

Google acts the same way as a grocery store where you can locate 3 products for that picnic.  Each product is different, but ultimately is part of the picnic.  Google's grocery shelves look like this.  Each of these products is different, but ultimately is part of the picnic.

We will quicky introduce the Local Maps Listing product and the importance of making sure your listing exists.  Building a local listing in Google Places is just as important as knowing the address for the new home you just moved into.  I have never know anyone that just moved into their new house to not know what their address is, especially if they want all of their family to be able to visit them next Thanksgiving.  It's an interesting analogy because it works the same way on Google (for those that don't know, Google is a company that makes about $2.6 Billion dollars in revenue each month of their existence by helping people find what they want on the Internet.)  A local business needs to be stabalized and found on the Internet so Everyone can visit their company.  This is where Google's local product comes in.  THIS IS 1 OF THE 3 PRODUCTS ON THE SHELF.  There is a great article put out by Website Magazine that details Google's Local product and the 3 ways to optimize this listing.

We will talk more about how this listing works a little later.

Why do Contractors need a website?

Contractors ask everyday, "Why do I need a website?  All of my business comes word of mouth or from referrals from my existing customers.  I don't need to be on the web; it's too much work; it's too confusing; I don't have a computer; I don't understand all of this.  Why, why, why??"

I know it can seem overwhelming on where to start and what to do.  Here are Lumus Construction's feelings about the importance of having a company website.  Remember the costs to establish the basics of a custom website are very reasonable!
